Most of the residential towers that have been built recently in the City along the Lonsdale core have those characteristics. The new towers at the waterfront have been the catalyst for the opening up and redevelopment of what used to be an industrial wasteland. Two towers at behind City Hall paid for a new library. A tower at the site of the old Shell gas station at 13th and Lonsdale will help us retain a major employer and turn an eyesore into a landmark.
Unplanned density in single family neighbourhoods brings few benefits and often unwelcome side effects such as more parked cars and crowding where the infrastructure is not built to handle it.
I am in favour of density where there is a demonstrable benefit, the public has ample time to see successive versions of the plans and our sidewalks and roads are sized to handle it. I am not in favour of it when it doesn’t meet those standards. I won’t be rushed into short circuiting the public process necessary to ensure everyone with an interest is heard.
